Direct List Tidbits

Dear Customer,

Wii wish you a beautiful autumn! Wii wish you a Happy Halloween! Most of all, we hope you're getting your $500+ orders in, so you're eligible for the Wii game system giveaway! The drawing will be October 31st. How's that for a treat?

O.K. Let's get down to business. In this issue, we remind you about why "It Pays to Check Your List". The USPS is giving mailers until November 23, 2008 to update standards for Standard Mail. We've got you covered on that one. Also, check out our Educational Tidbit "Use Our Quality Checklist".

With Wii Wishes,
Adrian Klein

tidbitIT PAYS TO CHECK YOUR LIST

Imagine being hit with a 60% return rate on a mailing because someone forgot to proof the file.

That's what happened to a new client of ours, before they met us. More than 3,000 pieces came back. Wasted postage, alone, amounted to $780. Wasted printing costs. Lost opportunities.

What was missing? Apartment numbers. A temp had been hired to do the mailing, and didn't notice all the addresses that were the same.

Check Your List: Whose responsibility is it anyway? Everyone's. Make sure someone is assigned that job for every mailing.

USPS Sets November 2008 Deadline for Revised Standard Mail Standards

The USPS' Move Update helps mailers reduce the number of mail pieces that require forwarding or return by matching a mailer's address records with customer-filed change-of-address orders.

As of November 23rd, 2008, Move Update requirements will apply to all types of Standard Mail. In addition, Standard Mail mailers will be required to update their mailing lists a minimum of 95 days before mailing.

As always, DLT is working well ahead of the deadline to ensure that our clients are covered.

USPS Revises ACS, Simplified Address Rules

In the September 13 Postal Bulletin, the Postal Service announced two changes relevant to mailing service providers. Both included revised DMM standards and were made effective immediately. Check out their summary from MFSA or visit USPS's website.

Use Our Quality Checklist

It's essential that everyone take responsibility to check your list -- not just once, but twice! When you receive data, check these items thoroughly to ensure the list is accurate:

  • The total list count should match the counts run previously, or the quoted quantity.
  • Verify that the geography is correct. Compare Zip codes and carrier routes to your original order.
  • Are the parts zones or territories named correctly and do they match the geography?
  • Confirm that the address is complete. That means the street address, apartment #, city, state, zip code, zip+4. Is the title correct?
  • Is there a name, and/or business name? Is there a "title line change", for example "Or Current Resident"?
  • If labels were printed, check if the address information is completely printed and the print quality is good.

These little quality checks can ensure your list is accurate before it goes on to your mailing house or into a data processing service.
