Adopt a Family

Single Mom Raises Seven Children
with Abundance of Love

Over the past 15 years, a single woman named Nancy has adopted seven remarkable children. The six girls range in age from 16 to 4, and the baby, Michael, is 1.

Over the holidays, the Direct List Technology family “adopts” Nancy and her children, providing a Thanksgiving feast and a Christmas celebration with clothing, toys, gift cards and food.

Nancy, a P.E. teacher for the mentally challenged, raises her seven children in a four-bedroom Santa Ana home. She provides dance and piano lessons for the girls, an excellent private school education, and religious instruction. Some of the girls play sports. Baby Michael, who was born addicted to heroin, will have a busy school and social calendar one day, too.

About 50 now, Nancy has had several operations, and cares for her aging mother. Still, nothing stops her in her quest to give a loving home to the children whose birthparents could not – or would not – do so.

Nancy’s remarkable story began many years ago when she learned about a girl named Dominique who needed a home. Soon, Dominique’s cousin, Tara, needed a home, too. The girls went back and forth between their birthmothers, and Nancy, until Nancy was allowed to adopt them after they had been abandoned.

As time went on, Dominique’s mother had three more daughters. When they were 5, 4, and 3, the girls were left alone by their birthmother, a heroin addict, for a week. Again, the state took them away.

Again, Nancy stepped in to adopt the girls, Dominique’s half-sisters.

The pattern continued. Dominique’s birthmother had another daughter, Danessa, and she was removed from the home. Nancy adopted her. About a year ago, Michael was born with his addiction, and the girls told Nancy that he just had to join his cousin and half-sisters. She, of course, agreed.

Edette Herron at Direct List Technology came to know Nancy and her family through church. In fact, Edette’s son—now a father of four himself—became a father figure to the children in Nancy’s family.

“Nancy’s family is simply amazing. Everybody is responsible for everybody,” explains Edette, each girl is responsible for helping the household run and for sharing the love they have to give.

The Direct List Technology family enjoys the opportunity to make the holidays more special for Nancy’s family. Everyone contributes. On Christmas Eve, two employees dress up as elves, and others join in the celebration by delivering the presents.

“It really is one of most emotional moments when you’re able to help somebody who is so dedicated to helping others,” say Steve and Jay, employees at Direct List.
